About Pointillism

Pointillism describes this group of paintings executed in gouache and medium, one calculated dot at a time, through a belabored process using a ferrule type instrument. The route of my quest to build form in this way, had its beginning here:

A billboard on Hwy 2 in Wisconsin was my center for a period of time. It was possible to climb to the top level of the sign where I could see giant circles of color painted on the board, which served as our gangway wall.

Children had gathered on 3 tiers of the billboards’ scaffolding which rose out of the gully like a skyscraper. It had become a ruffian’s compound in the weeds.

Walking the top plank, I was struck by the loveliness of the colorful circles amidst the chaos and danger. A pirate ship in the sky.

Shortly after my arrival, I was sent to the first level to live with others in my caste - girls.

Viewing the billboard from the back seat of my parent’s car was perplexing. It had turned itself into a picture of something real. It was a miracle.

20 paintings from the era, spanning the 80s and 90s, have survived. As the final days of this series approached, so did the intensity of my labor.

Preceding Pointillism, were years of oil painting in the Abstract Expressionist style.
